RE: Audi 80/90 manual tranny swap?

Rolled it out into the street and the balljoints came off. Aaahh

More investigating, the '90 80 and '88 90 balljoints are different sizes. Parts can not just be swapped without changing the whole lower controll arm, sway bar, etc etc. The easiest solution is to have a collar machined with the inside diameter of my 90 balljoints and the outside diameter of the 80 balljoints. With that I can make these balljoints work with these hubs. I'll see what I can do.

I go into the machine shop with two balljoints explaining what I want to do and they won't touch the project for liability reasons. I come back with a drawing on a paper and exact measurements, they're machining some collars for me now. :D I'll weld them to the balljoints around the top, don't have to worry about anything.

I'd like to locate the connector for that "motronic controll unit" and the "auto trans wiring harness". I could get that stuff figured out while I'm waiting.

In the beginning of the post, you mentioned a gas leak- was that fixed? Did you ever see the car run before you bought it, started the trans swap? The no start might be another problem you inherited. How long did the car sit?

Which starter did you use? I would suggest using the one from the standard (to make sure the teeth mesh correctly w/ the flywheel). I would check the grounds, battery cables if the engine is turning over slowly.

Approach the no- start problem as if this is the first time you've seen the car. Start with the basics- spark, fuel, timing, compression, ect.

Nice work on the trans mount.

Update, more pics???

OMG gas leak, oh my memory, thanks for reminding me. I'll look at that now. That has nothing to do with the starting problem though, won't turn over now. Originally we filled auto trans fluid and I drove the car to my house, motor runs fine.

Of course I used the manual trans starter, yes they are much different. All cables connected clean and fine.

No I gotta approach the no start problem like I just did a crazy custom swap and have an electrical issue lol. I know the motor itself runs great, just won't TURN OVER now.

Update soon hopefully I get my "balljoint collars" today. I was gonna take the car to a good local shop to get it running or at least show me around some of the auto trans wiring stuff.

RE: Audi 80/90 manual tranny swap?

Machine shop finally got around to my collars, then tells me that they can't make them because they are too thin and they can't do it on the lathe. 19.16mm OD and 17.1mm ID, only 2mm thick. Said it could be done on a grinder and he doesn't have one.

Now I'm not sure what to try. Ask new machine shops? Can't alter the mounting situation on the 80 balljoints to work on my lower controll arms. Can't change my lower controll arms and swaybar and EVERYTHING. I really just need some collars.

They're the perfect demensions inside and out. I'll use the dremel to cut the groove for the bolt.
