1990 CQ rear diff ???
I have a new to me 90 CQ. 106000 miles.I've had it about two weeks. Its going in the shop Thursday for a new timing belt and a drivers side wheel bearing and cv boot. ?? is this. Its making a clanking noise under light engine breaking... sometimes... When you take your foot off the gas and are going down a slight grade it will make the noise. Sometimes it seems worse then others. Sometimes it does not do it. If you give it gas or clutch it the noise goes away. If you brake sometimes it goes away sometimes not. Noise seems to be coming from the right rear but sometimes sounds like its coming from under the passanger seat. Second thing I've noticed is that in playing with the differental lock it seems like mine does not let go like its supposed to. Could the locker be causing the clanking if for example there was a relase spring broken or missing?

That sounds kind of strange. It could be the u-joint if it happens under engine breaking. I know that my 5000 used to take a while to disengage the the diff locks so that might be normal or yeah it could be the release spring but it never caused me a problem.

k I was thinking that it might also be the u joint. Seem to think it might be covered up with a heat shield but I'll have to see. Just got done rebuilding the bracket the fuel filter is mounted on ( rubber was gone ) and didn't have the car jacked up high enough to get to the back of of the trans.
