Just updating my July 2018 post. The vehicle was going through a quart every 300-400 miles at 153k. Other than that, it is perfect: no rust and everything works perfectly. Plus it is a 6MT. After lots of second guessing, I bit the bullet and had a local indie shop rebuild the engine: new pistons, rings, timing chain, water pump, all seals and gizmos, walnut blast the valves, plus a new stage2 clutch. Out the door $8150. It runs great now and at 158k has not required any oil. I think the gas mileage may be down just a little, but since it is primarily a winter driver I should expect lower mileage in cold weather.

What can I say? I bought it with 99.6k miles for $18k and put 50k+ miles on it. So now I have $26k into a 158k A4 Premium+ that has no faults. Today I took it to Discount Tire for a rotation and one of the techs offered to buy it. Nope.

Default Buying used non Audi dealer

The bottom line is Audi is addressing the issue. I will have to report back if an issue arrises but for now Audi exceeded my expectations on this issue.
im considering buying a 2009 a4 avant with the 2.0T from a local non Audi dealer.

im curious if Audi will cover these 3 stage repairs and piston / ring replacement even if you didn’t buy the vehicle from an Audi dealer. Do you have to have records of routine Audi maintenance for them to cover this as well?

My indie shop has done an oil additive treatment meant to clean the rings and this has resulted in minor improvement in how quickly it uses oil.
were you able to fix the issue and did it come out of pocket or did Audi cover it? I’m looking at 2008 Audi A4 avant and I’m researching the piston / ring issue. If the car is no longer under warranty am I out of luck on Audi covering the cost?

I am planning on getting a used 2011 or 2012 a4 2.0 or 1.8l whichever i find first, but then im quite afraid and scared now that maybe i will run into these models which had unrectified oil consumption problems. the most scariest will be that if that happens i might not be able to ship back the car coz i do not know of any approved audi dealers here in harare zimbabwe who might be able to provide those fixes in the event the inevitable happens...so may you please help me then, before i get headlong with this problem. which engine type and of what year is safe from this oil consumption problem for the a4 sedan 2.0l 0r 1.8l
your help will be much appreciated

Default 2009 a4 avant 2.0T

I’m looking at a 2009 a4 avant with the 2.0 turbo 91,000 miles. I’ve read endless threads about the oil consumption and piston / ring replacement but I’ve got a few questions that I’m hoping someone here can clear up.

if I buy it from a non Audi dealer am I **** out of luck on Audi covering the repair if it’s needed.

Am I **** out of luck on Audi covering the potential repair of its out of warranty (it is out)? Or because of the miles alone?

do I need full records of Audis recommended service for them to consider the repair?
