Default "Knock" sound from front left side 10 days out of warranty

Hi all,

I'm a newbie, just got my A4 Avant 2.0TDI, 1 previous owner, 58'miles, 03/10/08 registered.

Car went for it's first MOT on 13/10/11 at Audi and they discovered a "possible fault" but the car still passed the MOT. There is a "faint" knocking sound from the front left hand side, if the car has been moving then it is easily reproduced. If I turn the steering wheel all the way to one side and the other, the "knock" is then heard just before the steering wheel reaches the very end. Also, I can now sometimes hear it when driving slowly on uneven surface, almost like it's the suspension shock being "seized up" or something. Is this something that is familiar to someone?

What is really annoying is that the car had warranty up to 60' miles and 03/10/11, if I would have done the MOT 2 weeks earlier, the "fault" would have been discovered while the car was still under warranty. The car went for MOT at Audi on the 13/10/11 as that was the first availability my local Audi dealer had. Actually, I was booked in for the 18/10/11, but by luck they found me a slot earlier. Still when I asked Audi if they will honour the warranty they replied that it is now 2 weeks out...

This is in the UK, Surrey

I had a knocking sound in my car also from the front left, they diagnosed it to be a sub-frame issue. It was a broken/missing bolt.

Are you sure its a knock and not a click, I'm still trying to get the click fixed.

Hope it helps

Default It's dissappeared for now

I took the car in for a "Audi diagnosis" and asked them to specifically look for a noise/knock from the front left side. The car was with them for the whole day and they couldn't find anything wrong, the noise was gone. I also can't repeate it anymore. It sounded like a "knock" before, almost as if the shock absorber was "seized up" and "come loose" when too much preasure builds up and at that moment the it makes a "knock" sound. I had a similar thing on my 2005 Subaru Impreza, the rear shock absorbers were "seizing up" and it was a well known problem. Some WD40 spray solved the issue temporary. Possibly the A4 suffers from the same problem... I don't think I have heard any "clicks"
