Default Can a leaking RMS causing air intake leak code ?

I need some expert advice before spending big $$ on a possible fix.

I have a 2011 A4 2.0T with 173K on it and a few weeks ago my CEL came on. I was due for an oil change so I brought it in to my Audi/Volks specialist.(not a dealer)

The garage told me the code was for an air intake leak and it was probably the PCV valve needed changing. No work was done at this time as the car was running perfectly smooth, no hesitation when accelerating and was idling smoothly. A few weeks later the car started idling roughly when in park and at stop lights. I brought it in to replace the PCV as suggested and was told that didn't correct the problem. They tried another PCV to make sure the first one wasn't defective and they told me the problem stopped but the CEL kept coming back on with the same error codes -air intake leak. After puttering around and spending over 3 hrs checking hoses and such for leaks I told them to call it off and went to another garage. I gave them all the info from the first place and they fiddled around unplugging hoses and probing with some kind of sensor tool that had a small light on the end of the probe. I had mentioned that the RMS was leaking a lot so they then looked under the car to see if the RMS was leaking ...which it was and quite badly.I was aware of this for some time. A liter of oil every 2000k approx. They told me that was my problem ...99.9% sure of it. .I knew that sooner or later I would have to have the RMS changed but I'd like to correct the rough idle problem first.

I had researched this a bit before going to that 2nd garage and did find it mentioned on a forum or 2 and what the mechanic told me rang true to my ears. He said that these motors were extremely air tight and the RMS was extremely cheap in construction and prone to being sucked in and leaking and there was my air leak problem. He also said the new RMS were better built than the older OEM's.
Is the diagnosis of RMS causing air intake leak code probable ? It''s a big expense and I don't want to spend the $$ only to have the rough idle problem still going on after a $1200 repair.

Sorry for this rambling post but this has got me stressed out quite a bit.
