2010 A4 Gas Consumption [Question/Opinion]

Hey everyone!
I have a 2010 Audi A4 (P+) [IT'S A 36/MONTH LEASE] This is the first nice car I have ever owned, so PLEASE be eaaasy. I know this is a remedial question for most.
I know you must put high octane fuel - between 92-95. But I was wondering what if you put regular gas (89) in or even alternate between each tank would it much of a difference?
Honestly I don't care about long term damage because I am just leasing it so would Audi be able to tell? I've heard all sorts of rumors that they can determine the energy output and determine the octane which would subsequently void your warranty. My extended family has Lexus, Mercedes, and Acura; and they ALL put regular all the time and have had no problem. I thought to myself besides the Acura, these are all luxury cars, and I feel the A4 is more of a sport car therefore needs more calibration and care.
I could be off, but I'd appreciate for any kind of feedback or correction. Thank you everyone for your help and time!
Thanks again,
Gas Buddy

If you put in 87, 89 or 91 octane youre not going to kill your Audi, and if you're a conservative driver you won't really notice much of a difference driving. If you run 87 you may or may not notice that the car doesnt perform as well; ie "knocks or pings" I have a 2009 A4 and I've filled up with 87 now and again and really not noticed much of a difference; then again I'm a relatively conservative driver because I'm trying to max MPG most of the time. If you do throw in 93, open it up when youre on the highway and you should notice a boost in pickup if youve been using 87. Like you said though, you're leasing and if you have no intention of buying out the lease after I guess you don't have to worry about it. What you could do and what I sometimes to is go halvsies on tanks and fill one with premium, then let it go half empty fill with 87, let it go half empty, fill with premium...etc.

In a response to your previous question: chances are you won't hear any knocking (for very long anyway) if you put in 87 octane. The computer is going to notice immediately that the car is knocking and it will retard the timing - therefore eliminating any knocking issue. However, it will affect performance. If you're not babying it, you will notice. Just my .02

I live in Southern California, and we don't even have 93 octane in most areas. I just use 91 and it runs fine. The dealer told me to use 91 or even 89 and to only use 87 if it's not from a cheap brand. Unless they do something different to the Audi's going to California... He also mentioned that the check engine light might come on.
