RE: Wanted Audi TDI... yes Diesel!!!
Here's hoping you start getting diesel euros in the States soon. New Zealand has really only started taking diesels in the last couple of years, but heard recently that 2/3rds of all BMWs sold here are now diesels. Quite a change in just a few years.
I've just taken delivery ofa new3.0TDI Quattro Avant and it is amazing (which probably doesn't make you feel any better). I test drove both this and the 2.0T-FSI petrol for quite some time and there is no comparison. The 2.0T is noisy (yes noisier than the diesel), gutless and spends it's whole time jumping up and down through the gears. The TDi just goes! A bit heavier in the front, but that seems to make it feel more solid. Arguably I should have compared to a 3.2 petrol, but didn't want to spend all my life at the gas station.
I'd go so far as to say the TDiwould give my '99 S4 a good run for its money (and that was chipped). I'm looking forward to fitting a SuperChips udgrade and seeing the torque jump to 550NM (it may then simply retire gears 1 to 5 as redundant).
Import one if you can!!
You could try this UK based company. A friend successfully imported a Porsche Cayenne successfully through them.

Good luck!

Yes, but importing a European-spec car to New Zealand is probably a lotdifferent than importing it to Canada, in this case-- $$$$ to make it conform to North American specifications, no matter what you may think of those specifications. I assume Canada has similar stringent requirements as the U.S.
OBTW... in Germany, the new B8 A4 is available with either a 2.7 or 3.0 TDI engine. Here in Poland, you can also get a 2.0 TDI.
Of course, car prices here in Europe are about 1-1/2 times as much as in the U.S...

Yeah, you can yet those diesel variants in NZ too, but not with Quattro. I used to have an A41.9TDi in Europe, and even that went pretty well. Certainly avoided petrol stations.
You're probably right regarding certifications. NZ uses the "if it's safe enough for Europe, it's probably good enough for NZ" mindset (then again, we import all sorts of used-car rubbish from Japan so Ireally shouldn't speak...)
