Temperature gauge issue

Temperature gauge issue
Hello fellas. I just bought my 2005.5 a4 2.0tq and this is my first time posting in the forums. I'm looking for a few solutions to my problems and and have found almost everything I need, so thanks to all who post & reply here. What I haven't found was someone with a definitive answer to the temperature gauge issue because it seems to not happen as often as a PCV failure.
The problem: the temp gauge works half the time, but the needle doesn't drop down to Cold when the car is Cold. SOMETIMES the gauge will work, but not show me the right temp because the gauge won't reset. SO, is this the gauge or the sensor. How do I go about changing the gauge if it is faulty or which sensor would be the culprit in this case?
My 2nd issue is with my glove box. The hinges on it broke. How do I go about fixing this?
Thanks.

temperature gauge rarely moves . . .
i have read many questions and answers on this topic -- but how can anyone figure out whether the problem means the whole gauge cluster in the dash has to be replaced or some other part. how would i trust a dealer on this? the panel is $1,400 i am told by the dealer . . . they didn't offer any other types of fixes or suggest any other parts that might need to be replaced to fix my problem.
is it just a guessing matter of replacing any and/or all of these that i have read about: temperature sender sensor, temperature gauge sensor, coolant temperature sensor, or 3 coolant sensors --
1. thermostat
2. lower radiator hose
3. coolant flange (near the firewall)
it's one thing if you are experienced enough to do the work on your own, but trusting the dealer on this and trying all these different parts would cost much more than i can afford.
any advice out there? it seems that this is a very common audi A4 problem, as i keep reading. my car is a 2005 1.8T . . .

the most common problem, if your gauge is not working or working intermittently, is the coolant temperature sensor (or sender if you prefer). it is the one near the firewall. should not cost you more than $20 for the part and 30 minutes to change it out.

Using a cheap OBDII reader, i could see that my temp sensor gave reasonable values, although my temp gauge only showed either of two values, 60 or 84 degrees C.
I have two faults p0172 and P0175, indicating that the engine is running rich. In artikels on o dll, this could be caused by a cold start condition if the temp sensor wrongly is reporting low engine temp. But this is not the case for me, as the temp sensor is injecting reasonable vaues to the ECU. So I keep on searching for the reason for the fault conditions.
I have a 2001 A6 Avant Quatro, 4.2 liter.
