Default New B7 s-line owner! Questions

Hey guys! New to the forum here. My wife and I just bought a 07 Audi a4 2.0T S-line. We love it! After taking it for a spin i've noticed a few things and thought i'd get the experts opinion :-D.

Bought from a Volkswagen dealer.

Before we took the car home they were made aware of the recall and sent it over to Audi to have the coils inspected. They didn't tell us if they had them swapped out or not, but I imagine since they told us about the recall and sent it to Audi that if it needed it - it was done.

First thing I noticed is the engine sounds clacky like a diesel or the TDI models. I'm used to the valve chatter of hondas since i've lived/breathed hondas most of my life. It just sounded kind of funny.

Next thing I noticed is the tell tale sign of either bad tires, or a wheel bearing issue. At high speeds it makes the sound that could be either things. Not sure yet.

Also, I decided to take it out on the highway and stand on it. The car has loads of get-around torque around town. When I took it on the on ramp and went through the gears I immediately noticed that the power is inconsistent. On long pulls in the higher gears it feels like the power delivery is wavy, if that makes sense. It pulls, then wears off, then pulls and wears off.

Other than that, the transmission is so smooth, it goes into gear and through the gears without any issue at all. Any suggestions as to what the issues could be (especially with the power) would be greatly appreciated! :-D

nice going. regarding the engine chatter, I just happen across a DIY thread here a day or two ago that implied a new cam tensioner might quiet it down...mine sounds like crap idling with the hood open, but I'm just living with it for now. My vw was similar.

regarding the power...do you know what transmission? I have CVT and it drives good, but I've driven loaners that just had the 6 speed auto, and it seemed quite lifeless.

How many miles on it you say?...you might check the air filter may need replacing...try something with a little higher airflow and see if it don't help the liveliness.

You might take to autozone or advance auto and have them read your computer for codes...if your coils were faulty and they didn't do anything about it, you should find out pretty quick.

Sorry can't help you with the rest, but enjoy a search around here for your unanswered items

I have an 07 2.0t and i agree with the pretty loud idling issue, i don't really mind it, i think it kind of sounds cool but that is all preference. If you just call audi and tell them u want to know if the recall has been accomplished, they will be able to tell u just through ur vin number. And since the car is a 4 cylinder, the power is more at lower speeds and having an automatic limits your power a little. Also the 2.0t only has 200hp stock which in all reality isn't very much, its got some good torque which is why its quick off the line.

If you want some more power, I'd suggest chipping it, its the best bang for your buck, around 500$ can get you upwards of 45hp with 93 octane and around 35hp with 91 octane which is deff a noticeable amount.

I'm not exactly sure what sound your hearing on the highway at higher speeds but very possible could be your tires.

Hope I helped

The clatter could just be the fact the car is direct injection. One of the most common complaints about direct injection engines, is that they sound a little clattery like a diesel. If you car has Pirelli tires, I have heard, and can vouch that those tires tend to have more road noise than other tires. Audi was starting with the older cars and working their way to the newer cars when it came to the coil recall. I can't remember the schedule. I saw it somewhere. My dealer was great and changed them ahead of the schedule, during my oil change.

Update: I called the dealership and they're concerned and have asked me to bring the car by first thing Monday morning.

The sound I hear coming from the wheels appears to be just noisy tires. The sound comes on at 45, then goes away until about 70, then goes away at 80 and above. They are still going to check the wheel bearings.

The acceleration issue has actually become worse. Today during a 70 miles trip the car completely refused to accelerate. At about 60mph I could pin the accelerator and the car would go nowhere. The RPM's were actually dropping with the accelerator on the floor. It was very scary. While thinking about what was going on and trying to find the nearest Audi dealership just cruising on the highway, all of a sudden the car started accelerating again, and the boost came back.

Later on after the inconsistent boost came back, it went away again, but this time the car was able to accelerate.....just no turbo. I all of a sudden had a non-turbo Audi. I came to a stop light and decided to try turning the car completely off and back on. Once I restarted the car it boosted again, inconsistently.

Could be a fuel issue? Could be a boost solenoid issue, could be a bad turbo wastegate or a bad turbo?

The car is 900 miles away from its 50,000 Audi warranty, but still 2800 miles away from the VW dealership warranty so i'm not sure what I should do. The VW dealership warranty covers 100% of parts and labors "that is covered" so who knows what that could be. I'm sure the Audi warranty would cover everything. I'm just worried if the turbo is bad, that would be a pricey replacement.

Also, I noticed last night if I hit a big enough bump in the road the HID headlights completely shut off for a split second before charging back up and coming on. When the car was idling tonight I noticed the passenger side headlight will flicker faintly but noticeably.

Also the window auto-down on the passengers side rear window does not work correctly.

We still love our Audi! We just need to get these issues take care of.

I'll update once I take it in to the dealer.

Has anyone had these issues before?

I am interested to hear about the acceleraltion issue, mine was doing similar right before they replaced the cam follower and right before my transmission blew....they never did know what to attribute the blown tranny to... :idk:

Another thread around here a guy had similar symptoms, (although I think I mis-interpreted them)...he found vacuum problems.

Here is what mine would do specifically...I could get it to happen at other times, but almost always without fail on an expressway on ramp

about half throttle, in S mode, somewhere between 50 and 60 mph, the power just drop out and the rpm shoots to about 5k and just sticks there... floor it, would go nowhere. ease off the gas and just wait about 5 - 15 seconds, everything kicks back in.

The problem got more frequent the longer time went by. Originally it happened only when I had the chip turned on...then it started happening under full accelleration and closer to top end speeds, I was considering taking it back to the chip shop, then it started happening with the chip turned off.

With ours, I can part throttle it on the highway and feel the hesitation in acceleration. After doing that a couple of times, it stops boosting all together. Our car is a 6-speed manual transmission.

Kudos fellow manual 6-speeder. We seem to be a dying breed these days.

Definitely take it to the dealer, your warranty should cover it. It could be something as simple as a boost leak. Also, audi's go into what's called "limp mobe" if it detects a certain problem, which feels like the car is running without a turbo.

Keep us updated on the solution!

Sorry, but a German car with an automatic! My entire family would agree that it is just so so wrong. With the exeption of a Merc 430, A6, and Q7, the other nine German cars the family has owned, have all been manuals.
