is it a MUST to give the gas a blip before downshifting?

i shoulda been more specific. i meant just move the shift **** thru the diff gears. dont let the clutch out for every gear thou.
this is just a random thought since i dont know anything about the specs of the audi gearbox

You can blip the throttle when downshifting.. As long as you don't floor it you won't redline it.
Like you were saying, driving 50 in 5th gear, traffic slows to 20: clutch in, shift from 5th to 2nd, blip the throttle quickly let the clutch out. 20mph in 2nd should be around 2-2500k rpm (IIRC).
That's definitely not the easiest thing to master. Obviously you don't want to just drop the clutch once you get into 2nd gear, that'll make the car jump/jerk around.
Like everyone else is saying, just practice and you'll get it. Once you master 1st gear everything else falls into place!

I too have only about month an half.. driving my first Audi a4 2.8qm and love it so.much I wake up and want to.drive it in the morning.. my bro was right when he said u have a lot of fun learning and driving a manual.. anyways that said. I too was intimidated bout the same reasons on how to shift n down shift ,were to catch my rpms and what gear to put it in after going fast n have that red light green light thing go. Best day is be easy on the clutch caress it.. don't just release it.. and always remember for each gear its around 10-15 mph before u gota shift it.to that gear.. so say u were going 70 n the curved off ramp is exit 40.. decelerate pop the clutch put in neutral look ay Ur mph n rpm.. if Ur going 40 pop it into 3rd gear release the clutch smoothly accelerate a bit try n find the right rpm location so u can release the clutch all the way.. I'd say it would be around 2500 or so.rpm.. I never let it go.above 4000 rpm since I feel I'm reving it too much... So that said take it easy n practice.. I'm no expert but decent . N I bearly have one.month .. oh and yeah if Ur going 25 and u have Ur gear on 4 u are forcing the engine alot just play it safe n put it in 3.. member for.every gear 10-15 mph .. e.t.c. everyone has their own style of.course n ull find yours.. don't worry I was also frighten about my clutch wearing out.. so bad that when I thought I would never get this manual thing to work I stoped driving my car for a day.. but then was like.**** it.. gota learn some day.. oh and if u.live in a high traffic area like I do in los Angeles.. good luck cause it will.turn into.a.love hate thing.. oh and watch out for.them up hills on a stand still.. I'm still.prettie nervous on those.. that I rev my **** in.first gear so.much it hurts.. lol now I.need to.get.advice on thay.. lol have fun tho n be safe.. don't be a.douche with Ur.car..

wow, nice description. 4000 rpm is a no no, you will freak out the passengers or maybe yourself...=.="...after down shifting the rpm should be somewhere below 3000...the lower the smoother the transition...release the clutch & slowly accelerate also help avoiding "riding a horse" as well.
