Default how to: repair the Grom ipod/3.5mm cable (headphone plug)

so my Grom cable crapped out on me recently and there was a short in the plug. of course the 1yr warranty is up and im ballin on a budget so i opted to fix it myself instead of buyin a new one for $18+. i couldnt find anything specific to help me so i thought id post something in case anyone else has this problem (i did recommend the cable to some other members in the past) but i apologize if this sucks
tools:
wire stripper/cutter
soldering gun and wire
shrink wrap
3.5mm (1/8") headphone plug. i got mine from radio shack for $5

this is for replacing the headphone plug so if the short is somewhere else in the cable, youll have to find something else.
start by cutting off the plug about half an inch from the end. then strip off the outer insulation. this will expose three wires (white, red, black). then use your fingernail to strip off the insulation on these three wires, careful not to rip off the wire with it since it is so thin. (how much to strip will depend on what plug you get)
when you open the plug, youll see that it has 3 posts. the longest post is the ground. the small post in the middle is the left speaker and the other one on the outside is the right speaker. now my main problem was figuring out which wire was for which speaker. so im 90% certain that the white wire is the left speaker(middle post) and the red is the right speaker(outside post). make sure you put the shrink wrap over the wire before you make any connections. now just put the wires thru the holes and fold it over and then solder in place. make sure that the wires and posts dont touch each other since this will cause a short. and the shrink wrap (or electrical tape) is very important since my plug has a metal covering that touched the posts and caused a short and made me waste more time thinking i did it wrong lol
that should be all and obviously test it to make sure you did it right, prolly before ya shrink wrap it.

hopefully these pics will help too. let me know if you need more clarification.
