how to install HID kit in 2008 A4 (replace halogen bulbs)
ok so here is my DIY because i could only find basic info and this whole process has been pretty frustrating.
ADMINS PLEASE STICKY THIS
warning: GET THE RIGHT TOOLS!!! if you are gonna get an HID kit, order the necessary tools at the same time and save yourself a ton of hassle. in order to loosen/remove the headlight housing you have to access a 'hidden' screw with a very long screwdriver. you will need a 6-8" long T30 torx screwdriver. I tried different ratchet extensions but nothing fit correctly, the hole for the screw is only 1/2" wide so it is easiest to just get a long T30 screwdriver.
with that said, the rest of the install wasn't too bad. I read that I needed to remove the front bumper in order to remove the headlight housing and I was not looking forward to that but I met up with a mechanic friend and we were able to loosen the headlight housing enough to give my big hands enough room to remove the old bulb (which btw, does not twist out, there is a small spring clip that holds it in. that would have been nice to know before hand). once you learn how to remove and replace the bulbs, the rest is just plug and play. of course, you'll have to drill a hole thru the access door because of the way audi wires the whole housing with a harness.
anyway, here are some pics to help show the way I did mine.
necessary tools: 6-8" long shank T30 screwdriver, phillips head screwdriver, drill, dremel (something to make hole big enough)
step 1: loosen/remove necessary bolts and slide the headlight housing forward to make enough room for your hand, remove access door and set aside (on passenger side, remove the air intake track to make room)
step 2: pull power connector off halogen bulb, just wiggle it back and forth until it comes off (giggity)
step 3: push down on spring clip to release the halogen bulb, it is on the bottom side of the bulb. wiggle and pull until bulb comes out.
Step 4: drill a hole in the access door. my kit had a grommet that was about one inch wide so I drilled a pilot hole and then used a dremel with a sanding bit to widen the hole so it was just big enough to fit the connectors thru.
step 5: remove protective cover from new HID bulb and careful thread it thru the hole in the access door and fit grommet into hole or cover in some way that will make it watertight. DO NOT TOUCH BULB BECAUSE THE OILS ON YOUR HAND WILL CAUSE PREMATURE BURN OUT/BREAKING
step 6: carefully place bulb/wiring bundle/access door back in place and push the bulb into place. you'll hear a click once the clip is holding it in.
step 7: connect the spade connectors from the wiring bundle to the power connector that you took off the old halogen bulb. the red power(positive) wire plugs into the yellow wire and the black ground (negative) wire plugs into the brown wire.
step 8: carefully tuck the wires into the headlight housing and leave enough slack to mount the ballast. dry fitting is always recommended before you start plugging in or screwing things down. plug in the rest of the connections for the ballast.
step 9: start car and turn on headlights to test
step 10: if they work fine, mount the ballast in safe spot using small screws or zip ties. I used small wood screws to screw into plastic. the kit I got has a very small ballast so I just mounted them right on top of the headlight housings. if they don't work, check connectors and make sure the power and ground are not reversed.
step 11: bask in your own glory at a job well done, hopefully
feel free to ask any questions if this doesn't make sense right away. and ill post some night time pics when I go out and adjust them.
shoutout to krautoled for the great kit and great price.

these pics show the long t30 screwdriver and how i mounted the ballast right on top of the headlight housing. it still has plenty of clearance for the air intake too.
they work great for me and im excited to test them out at night. i got the 5000k 55W bulbs and my stock halogen high beams are a lil more yellow so i may replace those in the future.
