Consumer reports was quite critical of the 06 A4's rough idle it its review. The magazine said that it was not in character of a sports sedan of that price. The reviewer also pointed out that the 06 Passat, and Golf/Jetta with the 2.0 ran quieter and smoother.

Regards to 2.0T v 3.2 V6 Quattro... I went through this debate a year ago. If I was travelling loads of miles, I would have gone with the 2.0T for fuel economy.

But as I work only 3 miles from my house, I thought "sod it" and went with the 3.2 quattro. And really glad I did for the performance and fun. It doesn't rip yer nuts off, but the surge of power is incredible and you can hit 100mph in no time... 0-60 in approx 6 secs I believe. Quick enough to get in and out of trouble.

The only thing I'd say is though... that the 3.2 FSI engine is actually not that bad for economy, if you drive it econmically... !

So if I sit on the motorway, 35-40mpg is achieveable. But knowing you've got 260 horses under the hood means it's too tempting to put your foot down. So I drop to 20mpg if I'm having fun.

So it's up to you... if you're not bothered about your fuel bill, you really will have no regrets getting the 3.2 V6... but just be warned!

With regards to the idle on a 3.2 - it is NOT normal for it to sound or feel rough of for the car to shake at 800rpm. No awy. That said, my car has just developed a fault over the weekend which is concerning me because it's just started to sound rough and shake at 800rpm, and actually the idle has dropped to around 750rpm and it feels like it wants to stall... so taking it to the garage Friday and hoping I haven't killed it!!!!

I have an 08 front trac s line package with the 2.0 and automatic for a loaner while my 06 2.0 quattro with manual transmission, is having some work done, and boy I am glad i bought the car I did. The front trac just does not drive as well in the slop and snow. It is not bad, but after having quattro, nothing compairs. The front wheels spin way to easily. The automatic also bugged me. It seems to not always want to downshift. Every once in a while, it hesitates to upshift. It also forced the engine to run at 1500 rpm or below, which makes the engine run rough. Even the Audi manual does not recommend running the engine below 1500 rpm because of rough running. The automatic also seems to make the turbo lag more noticable. From a stop the engine does not seem to have a lot of power, and suddenly starts pulling much harder at about 2000 rpm. All that aside, I am greatfull to have a loaner.

Never heard of the rough idling before. Does this apply to automatics only? With the manual, I have never felt it.

From what I'm reading it's the auto drivers moaning... certainly with a manual, you wouldn't expect this kind of idle at all. And I'd argue any car that idles like this ain't right!

It's definitely not "auto drivers moaning". You can find the issue talked about in several competent reviews, including Consumer Reports. Every single 2007 2.0T automatic that I test drove exhibited this behavior. Strange, is the same engine in VW doesn't. It seems specific to the A4 B7 2.0TFSI gas(petrol) engine with automatic transmission and it has something to do with the drag on the transmission while it's in gear and the car is stopped.

The 2009 A4 2.0TFSI I got a ride in from the dealership I rode in yesterday did not have this problem. The driver was one of the mechanics at the dealership and I asked him about this. He explained why and the differences with the B8 vs B7 engines but truthfully a lot of it went over my head. He confirmed it's endemic to the particular combination of B7 2.0TFSI and Auto transmission.

After having a silky smooth VR6 Jetta, the rough idle of my 2.0t manual quattro did take a bit of getting use to. Both auto and manual transmission B7's do this. Interestingly, the loaner automatic I had, would idle even rougher at about 10mph when coming to a stop, it would happen just before you could feel the transmission downshift into 1st. I guess it does not downshift out of 2nd fast enough lugging the engine. I can put up with the idle, because the other alternative was to go to a full blown SUV with so so handling, and poor gas mileage.

I think it's interesting that in (N)eutral you don't get the vibration but in (D)rive you do. The RPMs are no different. If the 2.0TFSI does this with the manual transmission I'd go nuts thinking it's going to stall all the time.

it all depends on what your going to do with it after you purchase it....

if you want to do work with your engine....turbo uprgade... bla bla bla
then get the 2.0t because there isnt much you can do to a 3.2

im driving an 07 3.2, and i love it... ive driven my friends fully tuned 2.0t and yea its stupid fast, the acceleration is much much different.... in the 2.0t it doesnt kick in right away, but you definitely feel it when it does... the 3.2 you can feel the power right away.... as far as fuel economy theres things you can do... like this http://www.pulstar.com/index.htm

oh and deff the quattro.... you can turn it off if you want but id keep it on
