Am I asking a dumb question?
Hi,
I posted this question a week ago or so and then I posted a question just asking how to check the transmission fluid level but haven't had an answer yet to either. So it makes me wonder since I don't know that much about cars maybe it's a really dumb question to ask??
I have an 2005.5 A4 2.0T with 72,000 that needed a new TCM which was installed by the dealer. That was a couple of months ago, recently I've noticed when I shift into reverse or drive and press on the gas it hesitates and shifts somewhat hard into the gear. I've read here that the transmission fluid is a lifetime fluid but what I'm wondering is when the dealer replaced the TCM would they have needed to access the transmission fluid? Is there a way to check the level?
Thanks for any advice!

There are no dumb questions. The probability is that no one knows the answer. If your transmission is a ZF 6 - speed, the fluid level is checked by removing a plug in the bottom of the transmission pan and checking for fluid seepage at certain temperatures. If no fluid runs out at these temperatures, then the fluid level is either correct, or low. It's complicated enough that it should be done by either an Audi tech, or another transmission tech with audi training. Since your A4 is a 2005.5, then it would be a B7 model and both the 2.0 and 3.2 use the same ZF 6 speed trans.
Since the shifting is controlled by both electronics and hydraulics, it could be that either the fluid is low, in which case fluid is added from the bottom of the trans pan through the same access hole that is used to check the fluid level, or that the TCM needs to be reflashed. I would recommend having a qualified trans tech check it out. Did the trans start having the problems following the replacement of the TCM, or later?
Good luck.

You should be able to find some info on the web by searching for ATF change etc.
I plan on changing my fluid at some point, and like nieljr said, the temperature is a critical paramter when checking the level. This can be monitored with a vag-com if you have access to one.

Thank you so much for replying!
I noticed the problem where shifting into reverse or back to drive was not as smooth as it used to be a little after the TCM was replaced. I think I will take it back to the dealer and see what they say. The problem is pretty subtle so I'm afraid they won't take the time to figure it out.
Thanks again!

I have to double check my receipt, but I just took my car in for its 34k service and I was told they changed the CVT transmission fluid so I don't think it's "lifetime". They told me it needs to be changed at 35k. I noticed it was shifting was smoother. I have a 06 with free maintenance so it did not cost me anything.
