2007 A4 2.0T oil question
#12
I can’t stress this enough. The 2.0T is a little on the “picky” side when it comes to oil. These engines not only have a turbo that needs lubrication, but they have a tendency to be susceptible to the formation of sludge, which can raise hell, especially if you do short hops. The spec calls for a VW 502 approved oil, and the two that are most readily available are:
Mobil 1 European Formula 0-w40
Castrol Syntec European Formula 0-w30 (look for “Made in Germany on the back of the container)
My 2006 A4 2.0T has over 140,000 and has never had a sludge problem.
Mobil 1 European Formula 0-w40
Castrol Syntec European Formula 0-w30 (look for “Made in Germany on the back of the container)
My 2006 A4 2.0T has over 140,000 and has never had a sludge problem.

RANDOM lol but once again, were on oil topics so thought id share this
-do any of you guys notice that it seems like our other audi siblings i.e: A5 owners, and B8 AUDI A4 Owners burn like ten times the oil that b7's do ... all i hear on their forum is complaining of the burning oil problem?. aint their motor the same just with a different ecu, 211 hp @248 tq?
-i like those b8's and hope to one day to work up to those, but i think i might go with the 3.2l v6 next time lol,... ive heard that motor is bullet proof

I just did another 5K oil change on my kids 2007 A4. I still think the design of the lower try is a PITA and maybe some type of german revenge. The other pain has been created by the tree huggers by bringing back the filter inserts as opposed to the spin o filter. Next they will bring back the toilet paper filters of the 50's , LOL. I usually use Castrol 5W-40 and the OEM filter but went with an after market this time. I find the whole process takes me an hour which includes checking the fluids as well as an underbody inspection and a cleaning of the exhaust tips. Knowing more about this car I would have steered the kid into either getting the 3.2 or a Lexus IS250 .

everyone is a car expert on the internet. i used castrol syntec 5W-40 in my golf for 5 years and i never had any oil on the engine cover. as soon as i switched to mobil 1 0W-40 for the last winter there was oil on the engine cover. go figure.

the sludge problem from years and years ago prompted VW/audi to make oil specifications. people were using cheap conventional oil in their 1.8T and wondered why there was sludge. turbos are demanding on oil. if you use the proper oil, there's no issue.
the whole oil "burning" thing isn't unique to audi turbo engines. subaru turbos have the same issue. their forums talk about it as much as the audi forums. the exhaust side of the turbo is eleventy billions degrees F so the oil that passes through the lubrication system of the turbo gets really freaking toasty and some of the oil is burned off. if you drive with a heavy foot, you burn off more oil. it's a fact.

If someone has a lubrication related engine failure and can’t show that they have been using a VW approved oil, Audi can simply walk away from the mess. I work with a gal that had that happen even though I warned her. She was using a synthetic, but not an approved oil. She was going to one of that Jiffy Lubes, and ended up loosing on the deal. The Quick Lube franchise wouldn’t do anything for her either.
So, when folks new to Audi’s ask, we should probably advise them to get the VW approved oil, especially where it costs almost the same as other synthetics.

Careful there, Esandes.
