2007 A4 2.0T oil question
Hello all, I'm new to this forum - I'm in the market to purchase a used 2007 A4 and came across a possible steal. A fully loaded 2007 Audi A4 Quattro with 65k for $15k...it has almost every option I can see...bluetooth, nav, heated/power seats, convenience package, winter package, etc. The car is extremely clean except for a few scratches on the back bumper (which I don't mind since it'll be a daily commuter to save gas from my gas guzzling Trans Am).
The only issue I've noticed is that I saw a tiny bit of oil on top of the valve cover (in the bolt holes near the coil packs). I was researching this and see that some people have 2.0T oil issues - where it consumes so much oil. The seller said she doesn't think it consumes any, but her dad owns a shop and maintains it for her, so I don't know if she'd know for sure. My question is, does oil in this area mean anything? I have no idea how oil can be on top of the valve cover unless it's experiencing heavy blow-by where it's seeping through the bolts? I may be completely off in locations/diagosis though since I'm used to maintaining late model GM pushrod engines. Thanks in advance.

They all use a quart between 1000 to 2000 miles. This is claimed as typical by Audi but to me it is a design flaw. You could live with it just as long as you get into the habit to check it every thousand miles. Don't trust anyone who says different. The overall fun may be worth the inconvenience.

Thanks for the replies. I don't mind checking oil every so often and already have a "loose tolerance" LT1 so I'm burning a qt every 1000-1500 already. Of course not filling is better than filling because all that extra oil will add up to some money.
Either way, I just wanted to make sure that oil in this location wasn't a sign of extreme blow-by or something I need to be cautious of - where I'm going to lose a ton of oil compared to the normal spec.

ive actually been wanting to do some sort of booklet to see on "AVERAGE" how much my car has been burning , jst out of curiousity ya' know,
i dont burn much, heck sometimes none at all, but if id do its about a 1/4 to a half (a quart) every oil change, which in my case is about every 5000 miles, if things get worse,
i might have to go japanese lol i.e : infiniti, lexus, acura

Correct............. Thats Audi's specification for MAXimum consumption. And its not a design flaw. All European manufacturers deal with the same issues.
And the oil you see on top of the valve cover is not from making a mess from filling.
Its common for a faulty breather valve.

Here's a little exercise to take. Look at all of the exhaust tips on A4's and see what they look like. I'll bet there all black and if you take a sample and get it analyzed it will be oil residue. Then again it is interesting that Audi and VW have special oil weight test to determine if the engine is burning oil within the spec. My 25 year old Volvo with 310,000 miles on it doesn't burn a quart in 5000 miles. The last car I remembered that burned a qt every 1000 miles was my fathers new 1953 ford OHV V8.
