I'll take a look at that DIY and see if adding or replacing the fluid will fix the whining. As for the sound itself, it starts when I drive, no specific speed, at highway speeds it goes away all together. It seems to be the lower gears that have issues. When stopping the whining gets louder and then goes away when I stop. The lower the rpm's the louder the whine until I stop. It could be that my power steering fluid is still get aerated. My current hose is leaking fluid, letting air in at the same time. It's still get bubbles so that might be some of the cause of the noise. I'll replace the hose and keep everyone updated on how it goes.

Esandes, please leave my post. Have your opinion if you like. Go make a thread about it if you want, but if you've got nothing productive to contribute then go away please.

Replacing the tranny fluid is not that hard as long as you have the hose thingy that usually comes with the bottle. The hose can be used to drain and fill the transmission. Not a huge job but then you have to deal with the over spill and the disposal etc.

If you can get it done for under 100 go for it.

Sound advice... There is ONE shop in this town that does work on audis and they do excellent work on top of that, very clean, and quick job, I'm still considering going back to them so they can replace the suction hose and I might just have them do the tranny fluid as well.

If it was the power steering, then putting the engine in neutral and revving it would produce the noise. But it sounds like it only comes when the car moves, which points more to bearings or tranny. My P/S has made a loud whining noise for 1000s of miles, but it goes away when I turn up the radio volume. At 196k, I expect some parts to wear and this one may have to be replaced someday.
