A little confused... the car that you mention sounds good, you probably will need a timing belt change at 80K, that's a good 1500USD, it will be good for up to 150K miles. I would stay away from CVT (audi's front wheel drive automatic) due to predominant unreliability. I have a 3.0 myself, is reliable on the engine side, no coils blown (knock on wood) not leaks or anything, other than the power steering whine.

I would look for or ask for the maintainence records and see how they did. How's the carfax? Maybe $1500 for a TB at a audi dealership which I think is a waist of $$. Got mine done for $250 plus parts. But yeah stay away from CVT...they are POS!! If you are a DIY'er your good but if not well then be prepared to spend some $$ if it breaks down.

Purchased an 03 A4 3.0 MT6 with 69k miles for my daughter 16 months ago for $13k from a private party. I think the trim on the 3.0 is a lot nicer than the 1.8T and the acceleration is nice and linear. Due to the recent coil recall, I brought it in (79.9k miles) and found the coils good, but the cat converters bad -- replaced under the 80k warranty. She had been experiencing an occasional CEL that went away by itself, which I assumed was a misfire but was the cats (or an O2 sensor, and the dealer made some money under warranty). Anyway, no CELs since the repairs. The price sounds reasonable. Test drive thoroughly, check every accessory, and ask for service records. You will be due for the TB change soon and a good indy should be able to do the work for ~$1000 vs $1500+ for a dealer. Dealers charge ~$120/hr and it's at least 6 hours work.
