Question Why are the stock HID's not that bright?

So my GF has a 03 A4 and I have noticed that the HID kit that came with the car isnt working too well. I have a 08 Legacy Spec.B with a 6k aftermarket kit (with projectors) and it works so much better light output wise. Shouldnt the stock 4.3k kit put out more light?

Are the lights not angled correctly or does the stock HID kit just suck? Is there anything I can do without having to get a new kit?

The projectors on the A4 are not the greatest, is just a matter of design.

Dan,

Is there any way to make them brighter? Would an aftermarket 5-6k kit put out more light or does this poor design control everything?

No, not really, you will just get a different color on the lights. You can adjust the height of the lights to compensate for the bad beampattern.

Since the lights auto adjust when you start the car how is this done? I mean is it as simple as a flat or philips head screw that needs adjustment to point the beam up more?

It is actually a cross tip, there's two little white caps on top of each headlight, remove them and you'll see the cross on the plastic piece; the ones towards the center of the car are for height, the ones towards the outside of the car are for side adjustment.

Default Deer Strike

I have a question about the headlights. Last fall I hit a baby deer and it messed up the headlamp assy on the left side. The whole bottom support was obliterated, but I was ablt to repair the top to hold it in. I am going to devise something to pull the bottom back to bring the beam pattern back down where it needs to be. I notice before the headlight burnt out, that I got a headlamp dipped message on the dash. About a week ago I got that message for the right side and then the light died. A couple of days later the same message on the left and it went out. I was wondering if that message is a warning about loosing the bulb or just coincidence. I also wanted to know if these lights do burn out frequently?
I also had to take the whole headlamp assembly apart and noticed that the glass piece for the low beam was rather dirty. I cleaned it and that light did seem to be brighter after I put it back together. I wonder if this gets dirty and causes the light intensity to decrease? I will warn you that it was not the easiest thing to get to and to get it back together I had to bend the projector holder. I was left with no choice since it had come out and was not in the correct position. I also would like to know if that piece ws removed if it would be too bright?
