Weird Rattle, starter?
So recently I began to pick up a rattle especially when cold and it sounds like its coming from down near the starter. I did the old stethoscope trick with a long screw driver to find the origin of the noise and no luck. It's not from the cat, turbo or even the cam tensioner. Zero noise from those points, now I can't get down to the starter to really hear but it sounds like something in that area. I've even checked the heat shields and nothing. Any ideas? Anyone run into anything on their starters like the engagement sprocket that get shitty?
Thanks

Engine code would be helpful here...
The noise you're describing sounds a lot like the idler puller for the ribbed belt (accessory belt). I've replaced a lot of them for this. With the engine off (I have to say it ) reach down to the pulley and try to wiggle it, it should have no play whatsoever.
