Exclamation Trying to figure out what's wrong with my drivers side window

So the drivers side window in my 03 A4 started making this grinding noise whenever I would role up my window. At first it wasn't bad but it progressively got worse. I finally decided to stop using the window, but when rolling it up for the final time it finally stopped working and was stuck about 4 inches from the top.

I am not sure what part I need to replace but I am figuring the window motor just died. I was searching online and was informed that because it was stuck and not closed to have someone push the button, as to roll up the window, and have someone else simply pull it up until it was closed. I did that so now the window is closed but I have a non-functioning window.

Has anyone ever experienced this before/know what I need to do to fix it? I am in college so funds are tight but I have some cash set aside to be able to fix this.

I think its one of two things:
1) One of the cables (there are two) has 'frayed' and is jamming in the pulleys that drive the window up and down and makes a kind of crunching noise or grinding as you describe.
2) The plastic 'runners' have deteriorated and are breaking up again similar noises. These runners hold the glass in place as it slides up and down.

I have an A4 and an A6, my A6 had both the faults and I had to strip it down to fix it. The A4 is a 2003 1.8T and is ok up to now, I think the strip down is similar to the A6. Search for 'window regulator repair' - there are a few good write - ups with photos....

You need a window regulator. They only last about 4-6 years due to the plastic cable guides cracking. The motors don't go bad
