timing belt questions...?

Since we are talking here about the timing belt and I didn't want to start a new topic I figured that I would ask my questions over here :P Today I was at the local mechanic shop (he was changing oil and transmission fluid in my car). While I was there we started to talk about timing belt replacement, parts and the price. The guy said that he charges around $800 for the replacement (your parts). He also said that he changes the belt without removing gasket valve cover. So my questions are: What is the point of removing gasket valve cover ? Is it required or you can replace the timing belt without removing gasket valve cover ?
The reason why I'm asking is that I replaced my own TB and I was following the instruction given by Blauparts and AudiWorld.com. Where both instructions tell you to take it off and block camshafts. I appreciate all the input.

its not uncommon for people to replace the valve cover gasket at the same time as the tbelt because half the stuff is out of the way already

You don't need to removed the valve cover to replace the timing belt.
As for the 800.00 quote. Keep in mind he's using aftermarket parts. He doesn't know your car. So he'll probably lose bolts when removing your bumper cover and timing cover. Leave some out, Replace with some self tapping home depot screws. Pretty much hack it to ****. If he gets it done without bending some valves, good on him.
My dealer charges about 1200. That includes Audi brand parts and a technician that knows your car inside and out.
Besides, I actually enjoy owners bringing in car they "had" the timing belt replaced independently and now the MIL is on for camshaft allocation or timing too advanced.
I'll charge you an hour to tell you he f*cked it up...
