hello i have an 02 a4 1.8T 5spd, i bought the car in april with 136k on it, it had the timing belt done at 92k, currently it sits at about 148k and was wondering around what mileage can i expect to have it done again. also what would be the best yet affordable kit to get and does anyone know a good place in CT to have it done at? ive searched the forums and still cant decide what to get or do. any help would be greatly appreciated! thanks

 

the life expectancy of the timing belts on these cars is pretty much anywhere between 70k-90k miles,but when you near the higher mileage end, just inspect it yourself every once and a while for cracks or wear.

ecs tuning has good kits from what ive read around the forums, but i had mine done at a dealer.

as for people in CT, im not really familiar, but maybe somebody else can provide some insight.

 

I got parts from "blauparts" they are really good parts. I also replaced my belt by my self, it takes time but its possible.

 

Looking at buying A4 1.8T in 2003-2005 range and all are in this 70k-90k window but some don't know if timing belt has been done or don't want to say it hasn't been done. Being new to Audi but fairly wrench savy is there a quick/easy way to check the timing belt for cracks/wear?

 

The timing belt cover is only held on by 2 clips, so it's actually really easy to get a quick look at it. I tried to google up a pic for you, but the only one I could find was inside a PDF. I found that one by searching "a4 1.8t timing belt diy."

Since we are talking here about the timing belt and I didn't want to start a new topic I figured that I would ask my questions over here :P Today I was at the local mechanic shop (he was changing oil and transmission fluid in my car). While I was there we started to talk about timing belt replacement, parts and the price. The guy said that he charges around $800 for the replacement (your parts). He also said that he changes the belt without removing gasket valve cover. So my questions are: What is the point of removing gasket valve cover ? Is it required or you can replace the timing belt without removing gasket valve cover ?

The reason why I'm asking is that I replaced my own TB and I was following the instruction given by Blauparts and AudiWorld.com. Where both instructions tell you to take it off and block camshafts. I appreciate all the input.

 

could you send me a link of the diy from audiworld? ive decided to tackle this job myself, i go to school as a mechanic in training and i guess i wont really learn unless i start doing it all myself with a lil 'guidance' here an there haha
