Speedometer acting funny.

Speedometer acting funny.
So I was driving today and cruising at about 70mph and my speedometer starting jumping around. Going down to 20 then back up and bouncing around all crazy. After stopping the car for a bit and starting it back up, it didnt do it again but it was enough to freak me out. My experience with issues like this is on American cars and it would usually indicate that the teeth on the speedo gear may be stripped and slipping. I'm not sure if this is the case with my Audi but any help would be appreciated.

My old motorcycle speedos would do this when the cable was dry -- they would stick, then release and bounce. A squirt of WD40 fixed it. Or it could be moisture that is icing up. But I have no idea if Audi speedos are mechanican/cable drive or electrical. Good luck and let us know what you find out. It seems no one else has had this problem, hence no responses.

All our cars have electronic clusters, speedo cables haven't been used since the 80's.
If you have a vag com you can do a gauge sweep, go into module 17 and work your way through the output diagnostics until you find it. All the gauges will sweep all the way to the right, then back to the left. If the speedo jumps or malfunctions when doing the sweep, the cluster is bad. If it doesn't, its a VSS (vehicle speed sensor) problem.
