Default New 2003 1.8t quattro auto!

So I bought a 2003 quattro automatic today and I'm going to pick it up tomorrow (dealer had to finalize some stuff so I have to wait one more day..).

I've read through this site nonstop for the last few days, and I think I've memorized the newbie guide. I still have a few questions though:

When you get a "chip", are you really just getting software? I thought you actually swapped the ecu...

Also, I have an automatic. The chip gives less than the 300ft/lb of torque limited noted in the newbie guide, so will I have any problems chipping an auto? If I were to upgrade the turbo down the road, the 300ft/lb limitation can be overcome by swapping out the torque converter, correct?

What is the best way to get a VAG-com/diagnostic setup with a laptop and usb cable? I assume a seperate unit will be more expensive and more limited than a laptop, so where can I find the cable and software I need to poke around my own engine?

Once you have a VAG-com setup, why can't you just upgrade your own ecu settings? Is this more of an intellectual property issue than a physical limitation?

Thanks guys, I've learned lots from reading your posts already!
