Default LPG Conversion

Hi Guys,

I am toying with the idea of have a LPG conversion done on my A4 1.8T convertible...

Firstly does anyone know if the cost savings are actually worth it? I am currently getting 31mpg combined...

Secondly if it is worth doing can it be done without using up anymore space in the trunk? Can the current fuel tank be replaced or space where the spare wheel goes be used for the tank?

Hopefully there is soemone out there with the answers.....

Mark

Simple answer; even if you drove well over 100,000 miles after the conversion you wouldn't break even compared to your current non-modified car.

Long story short, save your money.

Hi,

Can you elabourate please, I have done my sums and work out that I would get my money back within a year???

I am based in the UK and the conversion will cost £850 all in. I spend around £40 a week on petrol which would basically half after the conversion, therefore saving almost £100 a month!

Thanks
Mark

I don't know what you're using for your base numbers, but no credible data I've ever seen would suggest that one can cut their fuel costs in half by converting to LPG. Last time I checked there was a 4:7 ratio in the cost of LPG by volume which needs to be weighed against a roughly 25% reduction in fuel economy. By my math the very best one could hope for is about 22% reduction in fuel costs for any given number of miles driven, and that is ONLY if the current (historically wide) price spread between petrol and LPG stays as wide as it is.

The other thing to consider is that LPG is much harder on your valves and valve seats, and you may need to factor in the cost of doing a valve job every roughly fifty to sixty thousand miles.
