that could be several of problems...
but if its the mass air flow sensor or miss firing cylinders, autozone could run a free diagnostics check, as said from the last reply, and should be able to tell you what might be wrong.

buy yourself a scanner and save yourself the agony of listening to some idiot speculate about what the codes mean to your car. they can be had for $30 - $60 obd2 advanced auto, autozone, pepboys, and NAPA all sell base line automotive code scanners. tell us what codes you get and then we can actually give you a really good idea about what is going on with your car.
in addition to leo536's speculation it could be a fault in the idle air control system, fuel injector(s), coils, fuel filter, or something stupid and emissions related... do you experience a loss of power? car make any weird sounds? is it worse when the car is cold? hot?
is it 1.8t or 3.0? year? i would your basic basic car info in your signature so people know what they are working with.

i just had the same problem 5 minutes ago and have for the last 3 weeks. one cylider misfired i changed the coil pack on that cylinder and it ran fine. a week later same thing different cylinder and different symptoms. now just 10 minutes ago it sputters at idle. so i will see which cylinder it is this time and hopefully it will be fine. my suggestion.. do not change all coil packs at once. i did that the first time and ended up having to buy 3 more new ones. 7 total. change only the one that goes out when it goes out.

Dylan: It is HIGHLY reccomended that you change all 4 coil packs at the same time. The reason being that if you only change one the new one will be running at 100% efficiency and the rest will be running at less than 100% efficiency. This will cause uneven spark energy across the cylinders causing an uneven burn. It will also put an uneven load on the system which could cause electrical issues and you know how specific these cars can get with their electrical system. Coils wear out over time, it is not just one of those it either works or it doesn't type of thing. I'm not trying to step on your toes just passing along what I have learned in my endeavors.
