wow - this just happened to me today! driving home from work go to get around a slow truck. the car downshifts and immediately starts sputtering and the CEL starts flashing. i pulled over and had it towed i'll mention it to the mechanic tomorrow. ive got an aftermarket warranty so i hope they will cover it. and fix a couple other things while they are at it.

Its probably a coil. As far as the down shift if a coil goes there goes 25%+ plus of your HP and torque which is essential to keep that transmission spinning those wheels. As far as your aftermarket warranty, good luck. If it is covered, I doubt it because if it is a coil its a maintenance item (They dont cover oil changes, do they?) you more than likely have a deductible which will cost you more than the $130.00 OK...thirty dollars more than your deductible. However with that $130.00 you'll get your car tip top in litterally under 10 minutes (there is a DIY on this check the threads) and wait for it....4 new ignition coils (yes you should replace them all now. If they haven't been replaced before that you know). That way it will be done and over with no trip to the shop, no begging the money out of the screaming tight clenched steel fist of your warranty company to pay for the service. And finally a little satisfaction of a job well done. You become closer to your car the more you work on it. Good luck.

yup...you guys got it...you know what else they dont cover...the coolant leak, the valve cover leak, the transmission leak, and the washer fluid motor. oh and the mechanic said something about my axles leaking...never heard of that, do audi's have some type of sealed axle?

yeah so today was awesome.

i was about 1 mile from the shop next to my work or it wouldn't be there at all but i was afraid to drive it. otherwise i would definately do this myself. the shop is easily 15 miles from my house via highway i'm assuming its not safe to drive that far?
