Getting brake pads changed

Getting brake pads changed
What's up everyone, I confess that I do not know the first thing about changing my brakes. When I owned a ford escort zx2, I changed them with help from someone, but that help is no longer available. Therefore, I plan on dropping my car off at a garage to get all four brakes changed. For those that have done the same, that is not changed their brakes themselves, I have a few questions.
What are some reliable, quiet brake pads that you guys tend to use? I'm not talking brenbo, but a good brake nonetheless.
Also, assuming the rotors are intact, what is an acceptable estimate for such a job? I remember the same garage did the same procedure on the ford not to long ago for about $300, parts included. Though, this time I plan on purchasing the brakes ahead of time.
Lastly, if I can get the tools, how hard is it to change the brakes on the A4? I have read various instructions on how to do so, but the back seems pretty complicated. I'm sure it is probably easy enough to figure out, but for a novice, is recommended not to attempt to change them yourself?
Thanks again pimpin

RE: Getting brake pads changed
Ok, pads cost from $30 to a couple of $100s. Depending on what u want. One of the best are Hawks high street performance. They are i think $70 a set. U shouldnt be paying more than $100 for a complete brake job =rotors + pads. If u want rotors, look at Zimmermab or Brembo they are not expensive, dont get confused with thw whole brembo kit (about $3000). Check out tirerack.com or here you can order the rotors
Thats not hard if u got some basic technical experience- the same as on Ford/Toyota or Porsche.

I doubt I will need new rotors, if anything they will cut them as they did with my old Ford. I may order a set for the front and another for the back. This will cost 240 for installation at Midas. Seems reasonable to me. Otherwise, it will be 420 including pads if I decide not to order them.Obviously I don't want to get squeaky breaks, or those that wear easily, however I do not know they solid brands.

Currently I'm broke as joke, so unless absolutely necessary, I will not be getting new rotors. As for the brakes, I have seen various types that our car, but I do not know which better in terms of cost and performance.

RE: Getting brake pads changed
Most shops like to either cut or change rotors with every pad slap. While its not entirely required, it does reduce noise and I'm sure increase pad life. To the poster that said he shouldn't pay for than $100 for a complete brake job, did you mean front and rear, rotors and pads? That won't even cover parts.
Just tell them you want a brake inspection - then see what you actually need. You might find you only need front pads and rotors.
