Default First car - 2003 or 2004 Audi A4

Hello everyone!

I am new to these forums :S

For my first car, i will be buying an Audi a4 1.8t
maybe the quattro depending which one he finds first...

CVT, what is this? Scares me they have lot of problem like in transmission?
how can i avoid this? D:

well, where i work at a lot of ppl have bought fromt his guy he works for bank and repos cars and also goes to repo auctions n gets cars

he mostly gets vw (passat jetta, audi) cuz he likes them

he got a small dealer sells them for less is suppose lol

he will be selling me an 03 or 04 5 speed manual no more than 8500k

but he only has auto atm which i dont want D:

Are these cars reliable?! They do look very nice!!!

But sinc ehe gets vw audis passats jetta mainly it will be easier to obtain me an a4

cuz i gave him a list
gts celica 6 speed
rsx type s 6 speed
g35 6speed

all between years 2003-2004

i just want a car that will be fun to drive and one that i can afford dont wanan spend nmore than 8.5k for first car also dont want somethign old like in the 90's :/ haha

cuz anythign more and it will cost more than 8.5k but sicne it my first car i dont wanna spend a lot ont he car. lol

so to sum all up :

audi a4 good car? is it fun to drive? reliable?

thank you all

I hate to pop your dream bubble, but Audis are not "drive 'em and forget 'em" cars. They require regular maintenance and, as they age, frequent repairs. I would not consider any car from repo since if the owner cannot make the payments, they definitely do not do the maintenance. You are also looking at a 7-8 year old car. Things wear out and need replacement and on an Audi, unless you can DIY, you will pay a large fortune to a dealer or a small fortune to an indie repair shop.

But if you are determined to move ahead, avoid the constant velocity transmission (CVT) and stick with a manual tranny (it's the cheapest to repair). Try and obtain service records. Find a reputable shop who knows Audis and PAY THEM to check the car out thoroughly. If you cannot afford $100-150 for a check out, then you cannot afford this vehicle.

As a final thought, if you want a reliable, trouble-free, cheap to maintain car, look to one of the Jap brands. They would bore the snot out of me but they do not require the TLC of an Audi.

Stay away from CVT and also stay away from B6 (2002-2004) 3.0 tiptronic. CVT has known transmission issue and B6 3.0 has torque converter issue.

One more thing, make sure timing belt has been replaced.

Thank you all for your replies !

I don't understand what CVT is :/ Is that issue only with the AUTO or both? Because i am getting the 5 speed manual transmission

I have my own mechanic who is very good and does most of the repairs we can't do ourselves and charges a little. For example, we always change small stuff to my dads 97 nissan sentra like bvrakes oil, filter, etc regular maitenance. But we have an 05 nissan armada we got new 0 miles and it was time for brake change and oil but this car is huge and stuff and we never go to dealer because we know how they do shtty jobs and overchanrge lol. Just to replace the armada's brakes would be around 800$ lmao!!! Our mechanic has his own shop etc and he did it all for us for $245. He shows us all receipts of the parts he buys etc and just charges us like 40$ labor etc lol. Nice guy.

WHat are some things i would have to look out every certain miles?
I know imma change the timing belt and water bump as soon as i get it seeing as it will be 7-8 year old car and he said he can do it for us around $375 with parts n labor.

I am really scared and i work so i can pay for the maitenance but just howmuch is it? dont want all my money going to just the car lol

and i know u cant just get a car and thats it...u gotta giv eit the proper maiteneance

but what exactly are they? and thanks!

EDIT : also this guy checks the cars from everything. test drives them etc. a guy from my work got 2 audis from him an a6 and a8 i think (not the 4 banger he said) and hes had them for like 2 year now and no problems just had to replace timing belt and water pump but he says he loves them. and about 10 othe rppl have bought cars from him lol and they all happy. he doesnt sell u a messe dup car or whatever lol

Idk what CVT is? I read a bit and i assume it is only the automatic transmissions? I myself am getting a 5 speed manual..so will i be safe from this cvt horro i keep reading? or does it also affect the manual transmissions?

Truthfully, maintenance never really stops when you own an Audi. There are small gaps when everything in the cosmos is aligned, but every few weeks to few months, you can expect to have to do something to the car.

The big jobs on the B6s seem to be the timing belt job(needed every 80k miles) and power steering rack and/or pump.

Other than that, you can expect the heater core to get plugged up and need replacing, although it varies from car to car on what mileage it will be at when the heater core gets plugged.

Many of us do preventative maintenance, replacing parts before they actually break, in order that we don't end up stranded somewhere...or just because it gives us something to do on the weekends.

It sounds like you have a good relationship with a mechanic. So if he knows Audi's and can fix them for a reasonable price, then you should be okay.

In the end, only you can make a judgment on whether or not you can afford the repair & maintenance costs of driving an Audi. They are wonderful cars, but they require a lot of TLC as they age.

Good luck!

To be honest, I don't think you can afford it at this point in your life. If I were you, I'd look for something a little more reliable, with less expensive parts.

really? lol

my dads mechanic who does all our stuff just replaced the timing belt and water pump on a passat which has the same exact engine 1.8t...

for us he will charge us 350$ for parts and labor. that is nothing lol

but as u said i wont go a month without having to replace a part

he can get us all the parts needed for a very cheap price and labor he charges a little to us we close friends. lol

and if naything major and too expensive...2.5 hour drive to san diego ( i live in north hollywood ) and i got my moms side of family who owns own shop. he works with insurance company and where they rent cars lol he builds some nice cars and fixes a lot of stuff lol.

is this a car whereimma have to check the oil every week etc?

i dont see how a car has to be maitenanced this much lol like there is so much parts to a car that eventually u change evertything and nothing left to break? until another few years? :s
