engine knocking sound

hi dan ok i read the codes and it showed po301,po303,po304,po305.i think those are some old codes probably for the cyl. misfire because it,s fine on idle and accelerating.they also told me probably a vacuum leak or clogged injector, so i,m going to check the vacuum hoses but anyway that has nothing to do with the tictictictic i,ll be opening the valve cover tomorrow to see what,s up.please let me know what do you think about codes!thx.

dan do you also know if the camshaft has to be removed in order to replace hydraulic lifters.what type of gas do you use anyway ,cause since i got this car i only go to shell and i use v-power only-highest grade.

That is the infamous cam wear that I told you on the first post. I don't know how to repair it other than replacing your cams. Sorry I don't check the threads very often. That looks very bad. Find a guy namve Auditech79, he used to work at an audi Dealer, I don't know if there's a techhnical bulletin for this or not, if there is he knows, then you can get it fixed/replaced by the dealer under service call.

Hi. I have exactly the same problem. I'm ordering the cam, followers and the Bentley manual to do this myself. I first ordered the cam alignment tool. Thinking of putting on timing belt while I'm at it. I think $1,000 overall in parts! I'm ordering from Bernardi parts as they seem to be reasonable. My car is a 2002 3.0 A4 Quattro with 62,000 miles. I bought it used and cheap because the owner was not up to having the dealer do it due to about $3500 repair quote. I'll keep you guys posted! Cheers.

The ------ on your service is probably because they reset it after the oil change. Takes a few days/Several miles to start reading again, this is normal, something about has to judge your driving style to determine next service. As far as your knock idk. Good luck to you, I would get it checked before it causes more damage.

Same Tapping Noise - Same Problem?
I have a 2002 A4 3.0 Quattro. I’m afraid that I have the same problem as the OP (quattro fan) in this thread. After researching here, YouTube and other forums, It seems the tapping noise coming from the passenger side, towards the windshield (it sounds exactly like that in the above video of the V-8 engine) could come from one of the following:
Chips and/or worn Camshaft lobe
A frozen Lifter
The Chain Tensioner (not to be confused with the Tensioner for the Timing Belt)
Clogged oil vent line (Crankcase breather system)
Only the last one of these might be repairable at a reasonable cost. (I’ve read the Camshaft problem could be due to incorrect hardening of the Camshaft material or a change of the oil formula.) The engine has 167,000 miles and only recently required adding oil after 2,000 miles. (There are no indications of oil leaking onto the engine of on the floor under the engine.) It also might have been driven for a few hundred miles or so while being a quart low.
Before deciding what to do, I brought it to the dealer to get what I had hoped would be an experienced opinion. (For the duration of the inspection they loaned me a 2012 Supercharged A6 - it was sweet.) However, just like Quattro Fan, for $127 they told me that no Codes were detected, the plugs looked fine but it would cost $543 more for them to remove the Valve Cover for inspection and possibly diagnose the issue.
A year ago, I thought the car was only worth about $4,000 but ended up spending $1,500 every 3 months ($6,000 in all) for new Tires, F&R Brakes, Rotors and Hoses, rebuild the Transmission, etc. To sell the car now for a couple of thousand dollars with all of these repairs completed seems like a waste but spending another $3,500 to replace the Camshaft also doesn’t make sense.
I am no longer physically capable of doing this work myself nor can I afford the repairs.
What suggestions do you have? The Engine still runs smoothly. What will happen if it is the Camshaft and I do nothing? (I’ve read that if the Camshaft lobe is worn, the exhaust Valve just doesn’t open as far, but that wouldn’t explain the noise, would it?)
