Default Dipped Headlight Out

I have a 2002 Audi A4 1.8t. My right low-beam headlight is out and I'm getting dipped right headlight in the HUD. I replaced the bulb and noticed the old one wasn't blown. I went ahead and replaced it, and it's still out.

I looked at the fuse panel and the 20 and 21 fuses listed as for the left and right headlights are missing. Further research shows that these headlights don't have fuses?

I have the normal Halogen headlights. I do NOT have the HID headlights.

High-beam works on both sides, turn signals and running lights also work on both sides; just right-side low-beam.

Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this further? I checked for corrosion and everything looks fine...

I did look in the Bentley manual and found the wiring diagram for the headlights, but I'm not sure how to read the diagram.

This is still an issue I need to resolve soon. Any ideas?

I thought i replied to this post!? WTF stupid computer.

Do you have a headlight adjusting motor? Some halogen cars were still equipped with it. That could be the likely culprit. If not, there is a problem with the wiring touching ground somewhere in the harness, which would be a ultra bitch to diagnose.

Chris, did you get this worked out? I just encountered the SAME EXACT problem yesterday. I was leaving work and was whipping around every corner of my parking garage and that's when it happened. I feel like some sort of wiring must have come loose. Have you been able to fix it yet and care to share? It was also my right low beam with a "right headlight dipped" warning indicator on my 2004 A4 1.8t. All other lights work fine.

You can also get a ticket . For the time that my light was out, I had to restrict my driving only to the daytime and if necessary, drove with my fog lights on too (somehow maybe having 3 lights on is less conspicuous to a cop than having only 1, haha).

Anyway, I took my car into Volkswerks in Falls Church, VA (independent shop that's supremely better than the local dealerships (Audi of Alexandria and Audi of Tysons Corner). Fortunately for me, it was only my bulb that was messed up and not the whole assembly. So, it was a pretty expensive bulb change in the end, but still less than the warranty deductible I would've paid had the issue been more serious .

I have replaced my headlight bulb 3x already for the past 2yrs that I owned my 2002 A4 (B6). I will start monitoring the voltage but for the meantime, I'm trying to locate the fuse for the headlights but those fuse location that mentioned on the manual are empty. I'm thinking that it may worth changing the fuse to a lower ampere to protect my bulb. its cheaper to replace the fuse than the bulb. also, I did upgrade to HID and it busted my right ballast in just 2-weeks. Does anyone knows where the headlight fuse is? thanks.

Raudi -- I found that the fuse arrangement is slightly different than what is in the manual. The fuse arrangement is usually printed on the fuse box cover panel. I'll let you know where my headlight fuse is.

On another note, you were able to put in HID's into your 2002 B6? I would love nothing more if I knew it could be done without exploding.

seems like Audi were not able to update the manual on time before production release of B6.

Yes, I was able to upgrade to HID headlight, thinking that the ballast somehow can regulate the voltage and current of my headlights and save the bulbs but turned out that one of my ballast gave way too! (Now, it makes me think that my regulator could have a spike once in awhile).
Though I should mentioned that I encountered an ABS warning on my Dashboard the first time I turned ON my HID headlight. The Ballast is emitting an Electro Magnetic Interference "EMI" that affect the electronic circuitry of the ABS. It was confirmed by my friend in production that it is a problem on the earlier design of HIDs. Not sure if Digital version ballast has eliminate the EMI problem. Solution: I have to Ground the metal Case of the ballast in order to create an EMI -shield (and it worked!!). You only have to Ground the ballast on the driver side as it is the one close to the ABS module.

thanks, let me know if you find the Fuse location.

That sounds great, though a bit over my head and comfort level. Though, I'd still love to have HIDs..

Anyway, I dont know what the manual says, but the cover to the fuse panel indicates that:
  • Left Headlight--Slot 21--15A
  • Right Headlight--Slot 20--15A

Hope this helps! Let us know how it goes.
