Correct Tire Pressure
Folks:
I have a 2004 A4 quottro that I just put new tires on and the sticker on the door post says 30 psi with 1-3 passengers and 40 psi with 3-5 passengers. The tire shop put 30 psi in all 4 tires and now I have the humming sound from the front end between 40-60 mph. My question is what is the best tire pressure to run to make this humming go away it's driving me nuts! 30 to 40 psi seems to be a large range.

Is there a reason for the high gap in the psi for slight difference in occupant load? I'm normally driving myself commuting to work, but this weekend the whole family of four and bags are riding so I guess I should inflate to 42, which is what my doorjam says. It just seems so extreme.

I have never heard of such a thing. Who in there right mind would give you a 12 psi range. Do they expect you to run out and adjust the pressure evreytime your family get's in the car. That's just crazy, and just by the way I put 500 miles on the tires since adjusting the pressure to 34 and it seems alittle better but not much I guess I just live with it

It's pretty standard to add air when carrying a heavy load to reduce flexing of the sidewall and heat build up. I would be hesitant to go over 35-36 at the high end. Also check your tire sidewall for maximum inflation limit. I also doubt humming is due to tire pressure. Typically due to tire tread pattern or maybe your tires just don't know the lyrics.
