coilpack fried
I can't believe this is happening again. The coil pack on cylinder one is completely fried. I mean it melted! I was driving and the CEL came on. And then when I stopped, smoke started to come out of the engine. And that coil pack was smoldering. And these coil packs were changed a month ago. I managed to check the codes and got P0351, P0301 and P0688. The car wouldn't start up, and so I had to get it towed. Doubt I could fix it myself, because the coilpack is now fused with the wire. So gonna need that wire and whatever else. Any idea how this happened and what can be done?

audi just came out with a recall for the coil pack
they are the "r" update coilpacks
also they will reimburse you for any coilpacks that u have previously replaced
check this site audiusa.com/coils

Yeah I got that notice too. Was thinking taking to dealer. But this time its more than just a coilpack, probably some fuse or whatever else went, because it won't start now, likely related to the coilpack. Not sure they would fix anything other than replacing the coilpacks. And I've replaced these coilpacks twice now. So not sure they would reimburse me for everything.

Are u sure u are buying the revised coils. Maybe u should get the hitachi e coils boltdown from ecstuning. I had a coil blow on me when i bought my car replaced all the coils with hitachis and have not run into the problem again in three years. Knock on wood.

Well I just had my car towed to the dealer. I don't know what could have caused that coil to just melt and even melt the wire harness? My car could have gone up in flames. They are going to probably replace the coils with the revised ones, so hopefully no more problems. You think Audi would cover the related damage to the wire and ECM/PCM and whatever else? The mechanic who checked my car, said the cost would be about $500 to start, that is for the coilpack, wire harness and the ECM(ECU). If that doesn't work, then it'd be more money because electrical problems are tricky and expensive.

So Audi covered the repairs to my car thankfully. Replace all four coil packs. New wire harness and something else and replaced a blown fuse. Service rep said he has seen the coil packs burn before, but not as bad as mine did. It's a one year warranty or 12,000 miles on the coils, but shouldn't be any more problems. The tow hook cover was lost though, but no biggie I guess. Now I gotta send in my claim for reimbursement to Audi.

Yeah but this one is pretty good I think. The burned out melted coil caused other things to go bad. The dealer called Audi yesterday about it, and I guess they approved it. I was thinking they would make some excuse like say I used aftermarket coils or something and then charge me. I would have called Audi customer service and complain if they tried to charge me. I don't think I have to post about the coils again hopefully lol.

Thank you...and question.
Just wanted to say a quick thanks for this. I never received the letter from Audi and my car was included in this recall. My coil pack went on my way to Thanksgiving. I have replaced them in the past so I knew exactly what had happened. This thread saved me a bunch of money. Audi did it free of charge today.
Question - Anyone know how much the dealership charges to replace a coilpack if it was not covered?
