Default brake chatter?

when i go over bumps i hear a metalic clunking sound, but if i apply the brakes, the noise stops.

i took the brake pads off and cleaned them, then sprayed stop squeak on them because i cant stand the squeal. the clunking noise stopped for a bit, but came back. so i am thinking its brake chatter.

what would cause this and how would i go about fixing this?

thanks

I'm I'm the same boat. I even bought a new brake anti squeak spring and that didn't work. I've changed the rotor on that side as well. I did us the cheap advance auto silver brake pads. I will be replacing these soon to see if this resolves the problem!

When you go over bumps, you hear the sound? Did you check to see if it might be a broken strut?

My guess would be control arm bushings...

Aslong as everything is tight with your calipers and the rotors aren't warped... bad bushings is where i would be looking

it is definitely the brakes. the noise stops when I touch the brake pedal. like I said, I put on the stop squeak and the noise went away for a while.

Makes sense, I made a left hand turn and slammed into the curbing, but the noise didn't start until I changed the brake pads and passenger rotor. When I spray liquid wrench on it the noise/ squeak stops. When I push the brakes you can hear the passenger caliper rattle. It either the rotor is warped from the store, wheel bearing is bad, or the bushings. I'm going to tackles these items this weekend and I'll post my findings! Thanks audi tek!

if the wheel bearing is bad stop squeak wont make the noise go away. same goes for control arm bushings. applying stop squeak on a brake pad will not affect control arm bushings.

if the noise didn't start until after brake job then wouldn't it make sense that its the brakes.

i know for a fact it is my brakes.

have u tried to pull the pad and reseat them. I had that problem and had to redo it and the noise went away. And mine did the exact same chatter over bumps. HAd to be the most annoying noise ever with the windows down.
