Default 5 speed...

This past week it was pretty nice out and I took out my 94 bmw 318 convertible 5 spd. I never really noticed I guess because the last time I drove it was back in early august but it shifts so smooth compared to my a4. My A4 is a great car but when I drive her especially going from 1 to 2nd i have to bringing up the clutch easier than any other gear so it doesn't bang into 2nd. Even the other gears seem to have a little bump in them when i get aggressive with her. I'm guessing this is normal to the a4's but why? The clutch in my a4 definitely feels more aggressive when it grabs compared to my 318 so is this part of it? Just something I was thinking about. Its not like i bang the car into in 2nd all the time but when a friend or a family member wants to drive they always notice it.

My A4 is a bit grabby going from 1st into 2nd as well. 2 examples isn't a statistically relevant sample size, but I have heard it said before that A4 transmissions aren't the world's smoothest shifting. Of course it could just be that the synchros are more worn on 2nd than any other gear because it's probably the most common shift anybody ever makes...

The A4 5 speed should shift like butter.

Have you changed the gear oil in the transmission at all?

Is there any way to check the oil?

Also im looking to replace the oil because i don't think that the person before me has ever change it.

Do you know where can i find a tutorial how to do that ?

Thanks.

Changing the fluid on the 5 speed manual transmission is pretty simple. Drain plug is on the bottom of the housing where the fins are located. Fill plug is on the driverside of the housing.

IIRC it is just under 4 quarts. Best to fill it with 3 and then add till the fluid leve is just below the fill plug opening. I actually fill mine from the top opening(sensor plug) and stop when the fluid just drips out of the fill plug opening.
