Default 2003 A4 6sp Tiptronic problems

Good morning everyone.

I'm somewhat new here to this forum and was hoping I could get some help on trans problem.

I bought a 2003 A4 1.8T with an auto trans. When I bought it, it had a blown motor. Blew a hole in the block. Bought a new short block for it. Everything went back together great. Had very few issues with it.

Started the car to put it through some heat cycles and check everything with the motor. Everything was perfect. Went to put it into gear (R) and, fine. Backed it out of the garage. Put it in Drive and pulled it back into the garage. I happened to do this twice.

I then was going to take it out for a test drive and then thats when the problems started. It wouldnt go into gear at all. At first I thought I had the parking brake set. Nope. Then I rev it out a bit and it stalled. I was getting full light up functions on the PRNDL indicator. Like as if it were working fine. It would tell me exactly what gear I was shifting into on the dash cluster. Wast sure what was going on

I have started it a few times since and now the PRNDL indicator is fully lit up. Surrounded in red but the black letters.

I have ordered the Vag-com and it should be here today or tomorrow. SO I cant give you any info there. I was just hoping someone may have had this problem as well. Also I have yet to check trans level. I was going to wait for Vag-com so I could monitor trans temp. But if the trans levels are to low, would it throw the trans into a "lip mode"?? From what I gather, thats what it means when the PRNDL is lit up in reverse???

Thanks for the help

is it fwd? if so the transmission is called "multitronic," and is a CVT, while quattro vehicles have tiptronic (conventional automatic).

the tiptronic transmissions are very reliable as far as i know, but the CVTs have quite a few issues from software failures to mechanical failures. search around on the forum for common issues and repairs, i think theres a sticky in the b6 sections that has lots of good information you should read if you do own the cvt.

Well..... We have had a minute to go through some things here.

We checked the fluid level in the trans. Started the car, brought it up to temp a bit. With the trans pemp at 22* C I pulled the plug not expecting any fluid to be there...... there was plenty of fluid that came out, about 1.5L worth. Left the plug out until temp had reached 38* C and had no more fluid coming out.

Still no response from the trans at all. We then did the fluid service on the trans. Pulled the pan. pretty good amount of gunk around the magnets. cleaned everything and reassembled. We were only able to get about 3.5 L of fluid back into the trans. Ran the car for a bit. With the trans temp at 34*, pulled the plug and was able to add about .5L of fluid.

Still no response at all from the trans. It appears when the codes have been reset, it will now tell me what gear its in and in tiptronic mode it will display 1-5 gear. It will not move 1-5 but will display them.

I have done two resets via Vag-com. TCM and throttle body allignment.

Does this seem weird at all seeing how I had shifted it into gear before just fine, twice, after new motor was installed??

Could I have done something wrong when mating the motor to the trans?? Could the torque converter have **** out when the motor locked up????
