Default 02 A4 1.8 Q Transmission Fluid Change Idle

I bought this car used and I do not have any maintenance history on it and the car runs fine. I have three things that are bothering me though.

1. When at idle, there is a slight vibration when in gear R or D. But when it's in (P)ark there is a minimal vibrations. The vibration is not there when driving or revved up about 1000 RPM and above. I've read the forums and lots of people experiencing the similar issue.

2. When coming to a stop, the transmission or gear does not shift down and stays with the RPM, but shifts down to normal when slowing down to 30-20-10 MPH to normal. Is this a normal behavior on these cars?

3. The car has 100400 miles on it and I want to change the transmission fluid and filter but my Audi dealer said that the fluid on these cars are lifetime and does not need changing unless there is a problem. Does the transmission fluid lasts lifetime of the car and never needs changing? Kinda weird that it never needs fluid change.

This is my first Audi and the car runs fine other than what I have mentioned above. Just wondering if this is normal on these cars. Appreciate your inputs. Thanks.

Well, I'm not a mechanic but I can offer my input after owning and driving and A4 (3.0Q) for over 8 years, and "feeling-out" all the kinks

1. Before anything see if the minimal vibrations you feel in park "P" are the same as in neutral "N" as they should. Now put your car on a slight incline (uphill or ramp). Put the shifter in park. While stepping on the brake, engage the drive "D" or reverse "R". If the car jolts slightly and rocks it might be your engine and tranny mounts that need replacing. Your mechanic can easily verify this by visual inspection up on a lift. make sure your mechanic doesn't bullshit you and he actually shows you the sagging mounts when the car is on the lift if they are shot. If your mechanic says its not the mounts then you must look to the transmission.

2. Not sure of your question. The RPM's are always around 900 when idle.

3. Don't listen to the Audi dealer. They also tell you you don't need to let the car warm up in cold weather - you can drive away immediately because its super-duper German engineering. That's BS. If you are experiencing rough shifting, especially when downshifting (usually 2nd to 1st) and/or are hearing any clicks or clanks from the tranny (you can even feel it slightly on the gas pedal) change the whole ATF (filters and all). Some people suggest that you do that every 30K. Make sure though that you get the specific fluid and ATF replacement kit parts from Audi and that the person you does the work knows what they are doing. Fluid levels are a science. See if they can clean out your gear box of any residual metal shavings or muck.

Good Luck
