Default Will a bad mass airflow sensor ALWAYS throw a CEL?

My car is running like ***. I broke down on the interstate today after work. See my other thread here https://www.audiforums.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=148909.

I managed to drive it the rest of the way home. It idled roughly when I started it on the side of the road, but it smoothed out after about a minute. I got it home and turned it off...waited 5 minutes and started it again. When I started it, it idled very poorly, and it seems like the computer is trying to correct it. It's also spitting out black smoke (not thick black smoke, but like gas smoke) as it sputters.

There is absolutely no CEL, or warning indicators of any type.

What could be wrong?

In between the air filter housing and the throttle body.

It's connected to the turbo inlet pipe, located in the upper part of the airbox

Okay. I thought it was in the airbox...didn't have time to verify that before I left for work this AM. But the thing on TOP of the airbox is the ignition control module, right?

Where the heck is the plug to the MAF sensor? Do I have to take the airbox apart, disconnect the MAF sensor, put the airbox back together and start the engine?
