Default Wheel offset/ spacer question

I have been driving around with 17" rims off a a3 which i believe have a 56mm offset. I read that our cars factory wheel offset is 35mm. The widest tire i could put on without rubbing was a 205/50/17 Using simple math i see it s a 21mm difference. My question is i am planning on lowering my car, and i want to run 235/"please fill in"/17's with a "please fill in"mm spacer. I want as wide of stance as possible without rubbing. Thank you in advance!

No, the stock wheels are 45mm offset. Keep in mind, the farther away you get from that offset, the more leverage you put on the wheel bearings. And if we know anything about B5's, the rear wheel bearings don't need any extra wear and tear.

If you want low offset, you won't be able to run wide tires.
