Default Wheel bearing replacement

OK, I read the tech article on replacing wheel bearings (don't recall if it was here or AW though). What I'm curious about is how much of a pain is this? It's the rear bearing on my 30v Quattro. I'm experienced in working on cars and have access to a 6-ton press and air tools. Overall, for those who have done this job (auditech or techbod?), is it a decently easy job to do, or a job that's gonna have me fogging up the windows swearing? Just trying to gauge the overall job - easy, not too bad, or major PITA? Should I budget a couple hours, say, or an entire afternoon (not counting the alignment)?

Replacing Rear Wheel Bearings

make sure you break the axle bolt loose before you start tearing apart, everything else is a breeze

Yep - actually down the page farther there's one for the A4/S4 that is photo-referenced. Looks to be pretty easy and I just found that PureMS is selling the rear kit w/ bolt for $45 I was expecting the nearly $60 that I'd seen other places. One question though - it seems that some people said the camber bolt (I believe) did not have to be removed to do this, but maybe I'm just imagining things, or maybe that's on a front wheel bearing - any recollection about that?

If you read the article like you said you did the camber bolt is the main anchor point for the bottom and it has to be removed to get the spindle off to press the bearing out if your using a press. If your using a Hub Tamer then it can stay on and you press the bearing out while the spindle is on the car.

Good Luck...

That's what it was then - using the Hub Tamer. I thought there was some situation where it didn't have to come out. It didn't make sense that I might be able to leave it in based on the procedure, but I got it. Thanks.

the rear is a cinch man. just pull the hub out and do your thing. i found a local shop that removed the old and pressed in the new bearing for $20. well worth it in my opinion. good luck.

Sounds good to me but with the press and air tools at my buddy's house, I may be even able to save that $20
