RE: whats the point of buying an a4?
a4 vs s4 (for someone in college and working part time)
a4 is much cheaper with insurance
a4 is much cheaper to repair
a4 is cheaper to buy (01 a4 with 58k miles for $10,000.. or 01 s4 with 58k miles for.. $17,000?)
a4 was paid for in cash, would have had to finance the s4, thus costing even more money.
a4 saves me money on gas.
vs
s4 is much more powerful with more potential
theres still thought in the back of the head that says i should of gone for the s4, but for my situation.. the a4 wins handsdown. when i graduate and assuming the s4 has twin turbos again, I will definitely buy one. hell, even if they don't have twins again, i will probably just get a b5 s4 and go stage 3 (or a bmw 335i to work on).

ORIGINAL: FACT
ok I'll just preface by saying that I own an 01 a4 1.8t with ~70000 miles. I bought it for 10,000 used from a local dealer. I never considered getting an s4 because i thought they were way too expensive. After looking on cars.com I saw that there are tons of 00-02 great condition s4s with under 90000 miles for under $16,000. Why did all of you buy the cars you did instead of saving a couple thousand more and getting an s4?

There are other factors that go into it as well. Insurance and maintenance are big ones. Especially maintenance. When those turbos go out you have to drop the engine, not to mention theres pretty much 2 of everything in that car. Cost is double on almost everything.
WIth my A4 theres 1 turbo and an oil change isnt 100+$.
The S4 is an amazing car and i will own one someday. But for now, the A4 gets the job done. At 115k Miles its runing strong and i wouldn't trade it for anything. Well, unless my livelyhood was in jeaopardy.
