Default What hose is this? (pic, help please)

I looked at my 5 speed car for reference but it was no help. What is the hose in the pic and where should it be connected to? Got the trans in, but need to finish these little things up.

Closest guess I have is SAI pump. I don't recall seeing one on this car, can that open metal hose in the picture just be plugged? I read SAI was only on 2000 and up cars, this is a 97 A4 FWD 1.8 Automatic.

NO IDEA why the previous owner had it apart except he swapped the motor at one point. Thanks.

That's correct. That line goes from the combi valve on the back of the cylinder head to the SAI pump. I'm a tad confused though, the car being a 97 and all. What engine code is stamped on the head?

Car is a 97, I got it from a know nothing tweaker who had the motor replaced then promptly grenaded the auto trans. I got a new trans in, all set there. I will go check the motor code. Can I just plug that steel line to the combi valve? Would be nice if the car would pass California emission when my sister takes it back there. Thank you for the reply. My 97 Quattro manual has no such metal line to the combi valve to compare to.

IIRC, 97's didn't have SAI pumps. Makes me think the motor was out of a newer car and they just left that tube open. The engine code will be on the driver's side front corner of the cylinder head underneath the plastic engine cover. It's stamped on a little tab, should be 3 upper case letters.

Cylinder head stamp and white sticker say 'AEB'. What should I do about this missing SAI pump? Thanks

AEB is the right engine code for that year, I'm not sure why that plumbing is there to be honest. I wouldn't do anything about it if you don't have to. Do you have emissions inspections where you live?

def not a 97 engine. do you have a cel because of no sai? i don't think you would since your not supposed to have one. just plug the hole theres a few block off plates floating around the net.

I don't have emissions (FL) but my sister who I am gifting the car to does (CA). I could plug it but that would likely cause a fail on visual in CA? What is the proper block off plate to use? I assume I will need to pull that metal hose and place the plate where it went?

I know the previous owner replaced the motor, this one is nice and oil leak free Out of curiosity, what IS the proper motor code? I bought a 5 speed, same year I want to compare. I thought AEB was the more desirable one?

Sorry for so many questions and thanks for the answers.

If its a 97 and its a 1.8T, AEB is the right engine code.

The blockoff plate can be had from IE or Mike Hood at Ringer-Racing:

IE 1.8t SAI Blockoff Plate

I'm not sure if that will pass CA emissions or not?

Thanks, will order one of those. Will look better than just stuffing something in there
