i just bought a replacement coolant flange thing (the plastic piece those sensors hook into) and for my car it only has one sensor, but the flange has holes for 2 sensors, so it came with a plastic plug for the second hole. maybe someone just threw an old sensor in there instead of a plastic plug? you would get a CEL if it should be hooked up.
