I just got this car (98 b5 a4 2.8q auto) and it sounds... different.

The engine makes kind of a ticking, chugging sound. Nothing terrible by any means, but i just want to make sure im not overlooking a warning sign for some major "preventable if i would have listened" sort of problem.

I don't seem to remember my chrysler sounding like that... but maybe thats just how audis sound?

 

Video? These motors tend to have lifter noise, more so if to thin of an oil is used

I'm not sure if i'd know lifter noise if i heard it, but it kinda sounds like that's what it is, and i do have thin oil in it.

 

My engine sounds different depending on the oil level. How is your oil?

 

My 2.8l has burned about 1qt of oil per 3k miles since I got it with 52k miles on it. All 4 mechanics I have spoken to about it (including the dealer) say that is normal. When the engine gets about 3/4 of a quart low, it starts to tick...kind of like Milton the Monster.

 

PS Only on start up. Then it gets quiet.
