The ects simply relays coolant temp to the ecu so it can make richness corrections. There is a different coolant sensor that is on the raiator which is responsible for what you are talking about, which is hardly ever an issue. It is not technicaly the ENGINE coolant temp sensor because it isn't attatched to the engine, but the radiator.

Now im confused. My coolant temp gauge was acting strange. I ordered an ECTs from the dealer (the green one). I installed it, on the back of the engine near the firewall, and the coolant temp gauge began working again. It sounds like you are saying that this sensor is not responsible for the gauge reading or something.

EDIT: I found this link: http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=230355

4bagels states that the sensor is two sensors in one and 4 conductors - two for the gauge and two for the ECU

JC, don't worry about it man, people do dumb **** it happens. When i first bought my B5, I wanted to see what was under the plastic covers on the engine and air box, so i took them off and in the process, jacked up the wiring coming out of the ICM. That was before I got VAG COM so it took about 5 hours of a mechanic pokin around to figure out that i had accidentally yanked one of the wires out of the plug coming out of the ICM. (DUMBASS!)

That is good information and goes against what my audi tech buddy told me when mine was bad. Maybe what I speak of pertains to 96-99 only since they use a different sensor. Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the info.

Yea I though you might be speaking about a different year/variant. And now I learned something new about my car!
