it was actually from a self serve auto wreckers. I don't know if you guys have these in the states. Basically its a huge lot full of cars were people can help themselves to parts they wont for very cheap.

I got the oil cooler out of a VW Passat.

Default oil cooler

This could be great news. Where is this oil cooler and o-ring? I thought I had a rear main leak but it doesn't puddle all of the time. $8 is worth a try!!!

The oil filter is attached to the oil cooler. once you've removed your coolant tank reservoir you can see the cooler+ filter. Then once you've removed the oil filter then you can unscrew the o-ring.

in my car there was alot of oil under the engine, and it puddled up in pockets in the engine bay after a period of time then it will spill out onto the road.

I had at least 3 mechanics including my dad say to me it was a rear main seal leak. They were all wrong.

Before you buy a oil cooler pull out your old one, inspect it.

My oil cooler looked to have no oil on it when I changed the oil filter but once I pulled it out there was a diagonal spray of oil behind it which seaped down at the back of the engine and spread out under the engine so it was difficult to tell were the leak was coming from.

good luck.

Im a firm believer in the saying "It's there for a reason". Im no mechanic but im guessing without the oil cooler the oil would probably heat to an unacceptable temperature.
