Valve Cover Gasket Replacement
#12
If the sites are referencing a VIN number for the 1996 models, then buy whichever set is made for your VIN range.

I picked mine up off amazon for pretty cheap. You don't HAVE to remove the breather tube to do it also. Plus after you unbolt the valve cover, you can bring the tube closer to you to remove the tube FYI.

Tagging on to this, I have a 1999 2.8 30V AHA and am going to be replacing my valve cover gaskets (possibly cam gaskets, but we'll see).
I've searched online and can't figure out whether or not I need to use sealant as well. Some say to not use sealant on the vcg's at all. Blauparts appears to say to apply sealant in the corners only. Others say to use sealant in trouble spots.
With my 1999 I use the actual gasket, and not a liquid gasket maker.
I'll also be replacing my vacuum hoses.
Any insight is appreciated

right. you dont NEED to use any RTV, because the rubber gaskets SHOULD make up any spacial differences and provide a nice tight seal. And then every woman you see will try to have sex with you, beer will become free, and the insurance companies will start paying YOU to drive around.
But since we dont live in a perfect work and murphy's law is very much a part of the Audi experience, Use some RTV. It takes 3.5 seconds to apply a small amount of RTV in the reccommended places and it takes a whole hell of a lot longer than that to rip apart the front of the car to do the gaskets again if it doesnt seal on its own. Its cheap insurance and maybe you'll sleep a little easier. HOWEVER, dont go ape-**** with the RTV either. Too much is a bad thing.

I don't have the tools or ability to do the job,, so what could I expect to pay to have the cam tensioner gaskets replaced? A local shade tree mechanic did the valve cover gaskets for $150, but it still leaks and I was told by a Audi mechanic that I had wasted my money, if he didn't do the cam tensioner gaskets also, cause they will continue to leak.... The guy that did the valve cover gaskets says he doesn't know how to do the tensioner gaskets.
Any help will be appreciated!
