A couple of notes:

1) Oil leaks can be due also to high pressure in the crankcase system. If both valve covers are leaking than chances are that you PCV hoses need to be changed. There are writeups for that stuff, I downloaded one somewhere when I did mine

2) If doing the valve covers, consider doing the cam chain tensioner gaskets as well. they also go bad and can be tricky to change. If you got oil stains next to tensioners in the each head, than these gaskets are bad as well.

I would start by changing the PCV system hoses. I had huge oil burnout (over 1/2 qt per month) and after doing the PCV system it completely stopped and held 1 1/2 years before doing the gaskets. After checking the PCV hoses, I could see why: they were clogged beyond recognition, which then lead to pressure build up in the crankcase which originated the leaking oil seals.

FYI, my car had about 105k at the time.

Valve covers are usually sold along with the cam chain gaskets. Blauparts, for example, sells those sets and they come with DIY instructions.

Best of luck

PCV hoses are very brittle and most likely you will damage them when removing. If you haven't changed them yet and your car has 100k, my money is on clogged PCV lines.

These are the ones you need:

Also, you will need the y-suction pump:

The hoses are located next to the throttle body. the breather hose is very long and is connected to both heads.

And because I am in monster-help mode tonight, here's the writeup for the PCV system. It's for a Passat 2.8, but it's the exact same engine so it works step by step.

If all the PCV system has been changed, then you definitely got bad seals.

Double check on the PCV, though.

The PCV is just such a big issue because if you change your seals and PCV is still bad, you will get leakage again within 2 months, because the pressure build up is damaging them. And by them I mean almost every oil seal, including crankshaft seal, etc.

My 1.5 cents (assuming it's not quit worth 2 cents)

If your plugs are wet with oil then you're probably right to assume your Valve cover gaskets need replacing.

On the other hand, I'm a surprised that the cam chain tensioner seals aren't getting more attention in this thread. Those are major problems in our 2.8 cars and are known to leak in as little as 30k miles but by 70 or 100K almost sure to be leaking badly. Oil leaks profusely on to the exhaust making smoke and burning oil smell.

Valve cover gaskets are pretty straight forward, the gaskets are $50. Pull off surrounding components such as the coolant tank and the air box, unplug necessary sensors... unbolt the dipstick, remove the 10mm nuts on the valve covers and lift off. You've got to clean the surfaces with degreaser and you might use a little dab of RTV on the gasket where it bends up, right at the kink in the gasket. Be sure to change your oil assuming you get some crud or degreaser in it.
