RE: VAG COM issues
where did you get the cable from? if you got it from alpha bid, that seller has specific insturctions and is proven to work by alot of ppl. if you got it from ross tech, follow their instructions

here's the simple version. this took me hours when i first got mine, but its really easy with instructions. you just have to make the USB port, so that its read as a COM port
-plug the cable in (to the computer not the car)
-right click my computer and go to properties
-go to Hardware tab and click device manager
-There should be an expandable item called Ports (COM & LPT)
-expand it and you should see USB Serial Port (COM1) it might not say COM1 but it doesn't matter
-right click that and go to properties
-go to the Port settings tab and click the Advanced button
-at the top it should say COM port number and have a drop down menu.
-choose a COM port that is not in use. It must be ports 1-4. any higher and the software wont recognize it
-click ok, ok again, and then close out the device manager (it may say the USB port is still under what it was previously, but it'll change as soon as you exit out and go back in)
-open Vagcom and go to options. select the port you chose, and then hit Test. it should find it and then your all set

RE: VAG COM issues
lol, i did all that allready. my problem is that the LED on the OBDII end wont turn on, like there is no power going to it. But i know there is power coming from the car because i have a code puller and it works fine.

So, the LED where the dongle is, isn't lighting up? Never heard of that problem sounds like you need a new cable. What my problem was with my ebay cable they didn't have the right drivers, and i had to download it directly from FTDI http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm. That doesn't sound like your problem since your port is working and the interface(cable) is not. To troubleshoot if your cable is working id download unisettings http://www.unitronic.ca/uni/content/view/148/58/, and see if that recognizes your cable and if it doesnt id just send it back for a new one.
